Big Train College Round-Up 3/25

Yet another week of college baseball is in the books and Big Train players around the nation are starring for their teams. Without question, the top of that list for last week belongs to Martin Agosta (BT ’11). Agosta started two games for St. Mary’s (CA) this week, though the Gaels probably wish he could have started every game. In his first start, Agosta helped the Gaels defeat Utah Valley with a terrific line (W, 8IP, 2ER, 5H, 4BB, 8K), though that line doesn’t compare to his performance against Cal State Northridge on Sunday. In that game, Agosta pitched a complete game would-be shutout if not for an unearned run. Agosta gave up only three hits while not allowing a walk and striking out six. The complete game lowered Agosta’s earned run average on the season to 1.67 to accompany his 4-0 record in six starts.

Another player that had a great week with an incredible individual game was Hunter Renfroe (BT ’11-’12). Over the weekend, Renfroe’s Mississippi State Bulldogs (#25 according to Perfect Game) faced off against Arkansas (#3 according to Perfect Game). The Bulldogs were able to take one of the three games from the Razorbacks by a score of 11-2. In that game, Renfroe’s first at bat was a two-run inside the park home run to put Mississippi State up early. He followed that up with an outside the park two-run home run in his second at bat. After that, the game was out of reach for Arkansas. That game was one of the lone bright spots in a week in which the Bulldogs went 2-4 against Arkansas and LSU (#18 according to Perfect Game). Renfroe’s great week (8/24, 3BB, HBP, 4R, 6RBI, 2HR, 2B, SB) cannot make up for all the injuries the Bulldogs have sustained recently.
