Big Train Top River Dogs in Late Game Heroics

By:David Schneider
Wes Rea (Mississippi State) hit the game winning 2-run HR.

On Tuesday, the Bethesda Big Train (21-5) traveled to Vienna for a double header against the River Dogs (13-11).  The second side of the double header was postponed due to rain, but the Big Train pulled through in the 9th inning of the first game to beat the River Dogs, 6-4.  Brandon Rhodes (Florida Atlantic) got the start for Big Train and in three innings of work gave up five hits and no earned runs while striking out two batters.

Bo Logan (Florida Atlantic) came in and pitched four and one third innings in releif.  He surrendered seven hits and two runs.  Josh Thorne (Stetson) earned his third win of the season in two thirds of an inning.  Andy Frakes (San Francisco) earned his fifth save of the season in one inning of no hit ball to secure the lead.

The River Dogs took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd, but in the top of the 4th, the Big Train tied the ball game on a solo shot by Brandon Lowe (Maryland).  That home run marked Lowe's third on the year.

In the top of the 7th inning, the Big Train were able to cross the plate for two more runs to put the lead at 3-1.  Tony DiLeo (Eastern Michigan) continued to rise his batting average going 2-3 with two RBI from the plate including one in 7th.

The Big Train knocked in another run to give them a 4-1 lead.  However, in the bottom of the 8th inning, the River Dogs tacked on three runs to tie the game going into the 9th inning.

With Tony DiLeo at second base in the top of the 9th, Wes Rea (Mississippi State) hit his second home run of the season to give the Big Train the lead and ultimately the win.  It was Rea's only hit of the day, but it proved to be the most important at-bat.

Come out Wednesday night for International Night as the Big Train take on the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts at Povich Field.
