After winning three of their last four, the Big Train marched into Alexandria to try their luck against the first-place Aces last night. Despite a rough start in which the Big Train pitching gave up six runs in the first three innings, the bullpen shut down the Aces offense the rest of the way, as Will Resnick (High Point) and Jordan Gross (Tulane) gave up only one combined run over 5.1 innings pitched. Resnick and Gross also combined for five strikeouts giving up only five hits. Though it took a while, the Big Train offense refused to go unnoticed after an impressive showing early by the Aces. After back-to-back leadoff walks by Tucker Tobin (George Mason) and Brendan Hendricks (San Francisco), the Big Train would finally get on the board in the seventh on RBIs by Mitch Morales (Florida Atlantic) and Michael Bass (UNC Wilmington) to trim the deficit down to five. The Big Train would again pull closer in the eighth inning, as Cam Neal (Tulane) would work his way around the bases, eventually stealing home on a past ball by Aces pitcher Nicholas Marics to bring the score within four. A scoreless eighth inning by Gross would give the Big Train one last chance to overcome the four-run deficit, and the offense would make it a close call. Morales and Bass would give the Big Train runners on first and second to start the top of the ninth, setting up a Brennan Middleton (Tulane) three-run homer to pull the Big Train within one with two outs to go. However, the offense would be unable to get that much-needed seventh run across the plate, falling to the Aces 7-6 for their first loss in three games. The box score and play-by-play for the game can be found here. The Big Train will be back at Povich Field on Saturday to face Youse's Orioles!
