Big Train suffer second defeat of the season in Alexandria

By:Owen Krucoff
Jacob Westerman's fifth inning hit scored Big Train's first run of the evening and gave the team a 1-0 lead.

Despite four no-hit innings to begin the game from starting pitcher Tuck Tucker (Maryland), Big Train fell on the road to the Alexandria Aces on Thursday, 10-2.

Bethesda dropped to 11-2 on the season, maintaining its place atop the Cal Ripken League South Division. The Aces sit in third at 8-5.

The first four innings at Frank Mann Field in Alexandria were pretty quiet, as the two teams combined for six baserunners and no hits. “I thought [Tucker] had a great outing,” Big Train assistant coach Galvin Morris said. “He gave us a chance and kept it close, and we just struggled a little bit at the plate tonight.” Tucker agreed with the positivity about his performance. “I felt pretty good throughout the whole game,” he said. “[Beginning in the fifth inning], I feel like we almost kind of got complacent. We were trying to just not give up runs instead of just playing to our full ability.”

Morris led Big Train in the absence of manager Sal Colangelo on Thursday night. He saw his team take a lead in the fifth inning when a double from rightfielder Jacob Westerman (San Francisco) brought home leftfielder Justin Wylie (Arizona).

The Aces responded in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead, and broke the game open with a three-run home run in the sixth.

Second baseman Fox Semones (James Madison) scored Big Train’s final run when first baseman John Glenn (California Baptist) knocked him in with an RBI double in the eighth.

Despite the tough result in Alexandria, Bethesda remains on a successful track for the season, and will have an immediate chance to bounce back when the Baltimore Dodgers come to Povich Field on Friday. “We don’t have much time to rebound,” Morris said. “We didn’t play our best tonight, [but] tomorrow is a different day.”

Fans should note that the Dodgers will play as the home team during Friday night’s game in Bethesda.
