Big Train to battle Braves in important Saturday doubleheader

By:Owen Krucoff
Carlos Lomeli will start the first of two games which could have an impact on the Cal Ripken League South Division race.

Shirley Povich field will host its first Big Train doubleheader of 2018 when the FCA  Braves visit Bethesda on Saturday. With Big Train (11-2) holding a two-game lead over the Braves (9-4) in the Cal Ripken League South Division, first place could potentially be at stake in Saturday's contests.

Bethesda possesses a victory from the two teams' lone meeting so far this season, a 10-7 result in Annandale on June 13.

Righthander Carlos Lomeli (St. Mary's (CA)) is expected to start the opening game on the mound for Big Train. In his two starts so far this season, Lomeli has tossed ten innings, allowed no earned runs and picked up both wins. Owen Lamon will likely pitch for the Braves.

In the evening game, Bethesda is set to start a lefty in Alec Burleson (East Carolina), who will take the mound in the midst of a hot streak on the opposite side of the ball. As a batter, he leads the Ripken League in home runs (6) and RBI (17). The Braves' probable pitcher is Brett Kreyer.

Infielder Brett Norwood is the Braves' hitter to watch, as he leads the roster in runs, hits and RBI.

Catcher Carson Taylor (Virginia Tech) and outfielder Justin Wylie (Arizona) provide some pop within the Big Train lineup. They are each tied for third in the league in RBI with 12.

The first of the two games will begin at 4 p.m. at Povich Field, with game two scheduled for 7 p.m. According to league rules, the first game will last nine innings while the second will last seven.

To celebrate Jersey Day at Povich Field, all fans are invited to wear their favorite jerseys from any sport for free admission to the games.
