Big Train set to lead off July with doubleheader at Rockville on Sunday

By:Owen Krucoff
Quinn Flanagn will pitch against the Express for the third time this season when he starts the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Montgomery College.

Bethesda (18-3) suffered its third loss of the season on Saturday to the Baltimore Redbirds, but will look to rebound in a doubleheader matchup at the Rockville Express (9-10) on Sunday evening.

Big Train has won both of the two matchups against the Express so far this season, claiming a 4-1 victory on June 9 and a 14-5 triumph on June 17. Both games took place at Shirley Povich Field. Rockville is 5-7 this year at its home ballpark on the campus of Montgomery College, and most recently defeated the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts there on Saturday. This will be their third doubleheader of the year, while it will be the second for Big Train, who split a two-game set at Silver Spring on June 16.

Quinn Flanagan (Arizona) is Big Train’s probable pitcher for the first game, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. With three starts under his belt, the righthander has compiled 9.2 innings pitched and a 6.51 ERA. He started both of Big Train’s aforementioned wins against the Express. Rockville is expected to start Adan Reinoso, who pitched for Rockville at Bethesda in the June 17 game.

For game two, which is set for 8 p.m. and will last seven innings, Bethesda is likely to go with southpaw Brock Guffey (Alabama). Guffey has struck out 16 in 12 innings over his three starts so far, and has an ERA of 2.25. Po HanSuh is the probable starter for the Express.

After starting on the mound and thus not appearing at the plate on Saturday in Baltimore, Big Train slugger Alec Burleson (East Carolina) could return to the lineup for the doubleheader. The large field dimensions at Montgomery College have made it a very tough ballpark to hit home runs out of all season, but Burleson leads the Ripken League in home runs (8) and RBI (30), and will hope to add to those totals on Sunday.

The Express lineup boasts outfielder Jarel McDade, who sits in third on the league’s RBI leaderboard with 19.
