Big Train return to the district for final road game against the Grays

By:Owen Krucoff
Jacob Westerman (16) and Big Train will make their final trip to D.C. this regular season, having already picked up two wins there so far.

The newly minted Cal Ripken League South Division Champions are headed to D.C. on Monday night for a matchup with the Grays (15-16) at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.

While splitting a doubleheader on Sunday against the Alexandria Aces at Povich Field, Big Train clinched the division title and a first round bye in the Ripken League playoffs. The Grays rose into second place in the division, but still trail Bethesda by 11 games.

This will be the teams’ fourth meeting of the season, and their third in southeast D.C. Big Train has won each of the first three meetings, including a 10-5 win on June 27 in the teams’ most recent matchup.

Big Train has yet to name a probable starting pitcher for Monday’s contest, but manager Sal Colangelo will have plenty of good options to choose from. A league-high seven Bethesda pitchers were selected to compete in the Ripken League all-star game, which is scheduled for July 11 at Povich Field. They will join eight Big Train position players, also a league-high, on the South Division roster.

The Grays are sending two outfielders, Mitch McIntyre and Jewell Sewer, to the All-Star Game, as well as pitcher Isaac Olson.

Cade Negley is the team’s expected starter for Monday’s game.

First pitch at the Nationals Youth Academy is set for 7:00 p.m. Fans can follow the action on Twitter (@gobigtrain) and Instagram (gobigtrain), and can tune into the Big Train radio broadcast by clicking the “Watch Live” link on the Big Train homepage.
