Four Big Train Players Named to All-League Teams

By:

The Bethesda Big Train would like to congratulate Ryan Doran (San Diego State), Brendan Hendriks (San Francisco), Hunter Renfroe (Mississippi State), and Bo Logan (Florida Atlantic) on their selections to the Cal Ripken Sr. League's 2012 All-League Team. Doran, Hendriks, and Renfroe were selected for the First Team, while Logan was selected for the Second Team.

A right-handed pitcher from Orange, California, Doran will return for his senior year at San Diego State in the fall. He pitched in eight games for the Big Train this summer and compiled a 2.79 earned run average (second in the league) over 42 innings pitched. In those 42 innings, he struck out 44 batters (ninth in the league) and allowed just eight walks for a much higher strikeout to walk ratio than any other qualified pitcher in the league.

A third baseman from Cochrane, Alberta, Canada, Hendriks will return to the University of San Francisco in the fall for his sophomore year. Hendriks became only the second Big Train player in history to have a batting average of .400 or higher for a season but also displayed his power as he slugged 17 doubles (tying a league record and breaking a team record) along with two triples and six home runs. Hendriks was a staple of a Big Train offense that set many league records as he scored 38 runs (sixth in the league) and drove in 40 runs (fourth in the league).

A center fielder with the ability to both pitch and catch as well, Renfroe will return to Mississippi State for his junior year in the fall. The 2012 Cal Ripken Sr. League's Most Valuable Player, Renfroe set league records with 16 home runs, 53 runs batted in, 47 runs scored, and a .866 slugging percentage. Perfect Game USA selected Renfroe as a First Team Summer Collegiate All-American as well as naming him the Cal Ripken Sr. League's Top Performer and Top Prospect for 2012. Renfroe had his jersey number 11 retired by the team on the last night of the regular season. Though one number 11 hangs on the outfield wall at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda where the Big Train play, an additional number 11 was placed at the top of the left field light pole in reference to the extreme distance of his home runs.

A left-handed pitcher from Naples, Florida, Logan will return to Florida Atlantic for his junior year in the fall. Logan pitched in seven regular season games for the Big Train and threw 37.1 innings with a 3.13 earned run average (third in the league). Finishing with a record of 5-1, Logan's five wins were the second most by any pitcher in the league this season. Though he was steady throughout the season with 32 strikeouts and only 13 walks, Logan had a shining moment in the league playoffs against the Rockville Express. Logan pitched seven innings and struck out seven while allowing just five hits and no walks as the Big Train eliminated the Express by a 3-0 score.

Contributions from these players and their teammates continue to be the reason for the success of the Big Train as they reached their fifth consecutive league championship this season.
