The Big Train improved to 11-2 on the season and extended their lead in the South division to 4.5 games. After two consecutive walk-off doubles, Tim Yandel (Tulane) turned in another great game for Bethesda, this time from the pitching rubber. Yandel earned his second victory of the season in a strong six-inning outing, allowing just one earned run and scattering five hits while walking none and striking out eight over 76 pitches, 57 for strikes. He now leads the Big Train in innings pitched (19.0) and owns a nifty 1.42 ERA on the season. Southpaw Luis Collazo (Virginia Tech) dazzled in his relief outing, going two scoreless, hitless innings and striking out four. Blake Smith (Mississippi State) turned in a scoreless relief inning as well. Offensively, the Big Train scored six runs in the first two innings and kept on rolling throughout the ball game, adding their seventh run in the fifth inning and compiling a seven-run, ten-batter seventh inning to notch a season-high single-game run total. Second baseman Brandon Hunley (Sacramento State) had an excellent offensive performance, reaching base safely five times in five plate appearances. He roped two hits and three RBIs, walking twice and getting hit by a pitch. He also stole two bases. Leftfielder Chris Lewis (Sacramento State) had three hits, including a mammoth three-run home run over the left field fence, his first of the summer, the Big Train’s first of the summer. Lewis also added a stolen base. Shortstop Zach Kirtley (St. Mary’s (CA)) reached base three times and scored three runs. First baseman Harrison Crawford (Creighton) had a multi-hit game, including a double. Notes: Seven of nine Big Train hitters collected at least one hit in the ball game.
