Game Preview: Opening Night - Big Train vs. River Dogs Chase Gardner (San Francisco) staring down home plate during an exhibition game. After two straight wins to start the season, the Big Train hope to carry their strong play into their home opener against the Vienna River Dogs on Thursday. The Big Train's success has largely been the product of their high-powered offense, which has scored 21 runs in only two games. Two early standouts are second baseman Clayton Daniel (Jacksonville State) and catcher Justin Morris (Maryland). Daniel has reached base safely six times in nine plate appearances, while Morris drove in five runs on two hits in the Big Train's 8-6 victory over the Herndon Braves. The River Dogs will come to Bethesda with a 2-1 record, winning their first two games before falling to the Gaithersburg Giants 9-4. The Big Train won four out of five meetings with the River Dogs last summer. Taking the mound for the Big Train in their home opener will be Chris Monaco (Virginia Tech). The junior right-hander posted an 8.14 ERA in 24 1/3 innings last year for the Hokies, almost entirely as a reliever. Monaco also struck out 16 and walked 8 over the course of the season. First pitch will be at 7:30 p.m. The first 500 fans receive an Opening Day T-Shirt sponsored by Grossberg Company.
