The Bethesda Big Train defeated the Vienna Riverdogs 9-1 after a grand debut from Logan Farrar (VCU).

After three innings, the Big Train couldn’t get the offense going. They only had one base runner their first time through the order. However, Johnny York (St. Mary’s) kept the game scoreless with three solid innings of work.

The Riverdogs broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with solo shot over the right field wall.

Vienna's lead did not last long when Cam Daughtery (Bowling Green St.) reached on an error to score Cody Brown (Miss. St.) from third in the top of the fifth.

Bethesda grabbed the lead with an effective sixth inning. Farrar started the rally with his first hit of the season, a single to right field. Clayton Daniel (Jacksonville St.) brought him home with some help. 

Daniel singled to center and advanced to second with Farrar running to third. Vienna’s centerfielder overthrew the third baseman allowing Farrar to score and Daniel to advance to third.

Gunnar Lambert (FAU) made the score 3-1 with an RBI single to right.

The Big Train opened up the game with a massive seventh inning. Each of the first three batters reached safely leaving the bases loaded with nobody out for Farrar. The veteran crushed a ball over the center field fence for his first homerun of the season. His grand slam gave the Big Train a 7-1 lead.

Farrar was a crucial part of the offense going 2-3 on the day with one homerun and two walks in his 2016 debut. He also covered an incredible amount of ground defensively as it seemed no ball was hit too far for him to retrieve.

“[Farrar] adds speed and can catch anything down in the outfield,” manager Sal Colangelo said. “Any time he is at the plate he has a chance of launching one or hitting a single and stealing two bags.”

Daniel and Allen Smoot (San Francisco) added two more in the eighth, each picking up an RBI to finish the day.

“I thought we were taking good at bats all game,” Colangelo said. “Things weren’t falling early. We made some adjustments and we played smart baseball.”

The Big Train return to action tomorrow in Washington D.C. for a doubleheader. Game one is set for 5:00 p.m..
