Preview: Big Train Need Bats to Come Alive Against Express

Andrew Jones (FAU)

In their final game of a seven game home stand, the Big Train will take on the Rockville Express Saturday night in a cross-division test.  At 7-3 the Big Train sit second in the South Division, two and a half games behind the Alexandria Aces.

“Every time we play it’s a World Series for everybody when they beat us,” manager Sal Colangelo said.  “So we just got to come focused ready to go.”

James Outman (Sacramento State), who leads the league in batting average, will spearhead the Big Train Offense against Rockville on Saturday, while Logan Driscoll (George Mason) and Vinny Esposito (Sacramento State) look to bounce back after poor performances against Herndon.

“Just got to stop thinking. Just get out there, start hitting again,” Outman said of adjustments Big Train hitters need to make. “Just go back to our routine since day one and get going.”

For a pitching staff that has struggled with starters and middle relievers the last few outings, Ty Madrigal (St. Mary’s) showed encouraging signs in Friday night’s loss 6-0 loss to the FCA Herndon Braves.  The Elk Grove, CA native went seven innings, giving up four hits with six strikeouts.

Andrew Jones (FAU) will be on the bump Saturday against the Express. The 6-foot-4-inch righty went four innings giving up one run on three hits and struck out four in his first outing of the summer against the Gaithersburg Giants.

“Whatever we have to do we’re going to show up and try to do it, get a win,” assistant coach Tyler McKee said.

In their first matchup of the season, the Big Train came away victorious 7-1 over the Express thanks to Jacob Koos’ (Stetson) 3-for-4 night and dominant pitching performances by starter Ken Waldichuk (St. Mary’s) and relievers Joe Nahas (UMBC) and Nash Eppard (Bryant).

“We jump on them early and we should get the dub,” Madrigal said.

First pitch from Shirley Povich Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
