Big Train College Round-Up 3/19

The first month of the college baseball season has come to a close and some who started off hot are cooling down. That’s not the case for everyone.  A great example is the Big Train players at UNC-Wilmington. At the plate, Drew Farber (BT ’10-’12) reached base nine of the 12 times he stepped to the plate this week (3/6, 5BB, HBP, 2R, 2SB) while Michael Bass (BT ’11) drove runners around the bases (6/12, HBP, 2R, 5RBI, 2B). On the mound, Kelly Secrest (BT ’11-’12) and Ricky Holden (BT ’12) combined for three great appearances (2SV, 7.2IP, 2ER, 9H, 0BB, 6k) out of the bullpen this week. All that production helped the Seahawks win all four of their games (three against James Madison, one against College of Charleston) by a combined score of 38-20.

A bunch of Big Train players were also teaming up to help out the Gaels of St. Mary’s (CA). Two of those players combined to pitch all nine innings of a 6-3 Gael win last Friday night. Martin Agosta (BT ’11) started the game (W, 7IP, ER, 6H, 2BB, 4K) and Patrick Keane (BT ’10-’11) finished it (SV, 2IP, 0ER, H, BB, 2K). Cole Norton (BT ’12) also contributed (5/9, 2R, 2RBI, BB, 3B) in a series where the Gaels took two of three from San Diego State.

While some of the Big Train bats around the country have quieted a bit, that statement doesn’t apply to Adam Barry (BT ’11) at Cal State Northridge. Barry filled the box score this week as he reached base (11 of 22 times), scored (4 runs), drove in runs (4 RBI), hit for power (3 doubles), and stole a base.

Before we get to the notable pitching lines, there’s a bit of bad news to report. Taylor Stark (BT ’11-’12) had been doing well for Mississippi State both at the plate and on the mound, including a good start to this week (3/6, BB, R, RBI, 2SB), but will miss at least a few weeks with a torn hamstring. We wish him and Daryl Norris (BT ’11-’12), who was injured last week, the best and hope to see him back on the field soon.

Notable pitching performances from around the county: Ryan Garton (BT ’11 / Florida Atlantic) - W, 7IP, ER, 2H, 2BB, HBP, 7K… Tucker Donahue (BT ’11 / Stetson) - W, 5IP, 0ER, 2H, HBP, 5K… David Wayne Russo (BT ’11-’12 / San Jose State) - W, 3.2IP, 2H, 0BB, 5K.
