Big Train's Four Game Win Streak Snapped, Fall to Cardinals 8-7

Kyle Wernicki's (VT) 3-run HR in the ninth wasn't enough.

Box Score: L, 8-7 (Extra Innings)

The Big Train took on the Presstman Cardinals on Saturday night, setting their sites on their fifth straight win.

The Big Train got on the board first, as Ricky Santiago (Florida Atlantic) scored on a sacrifice fly by Tucker Tobin (George Mason) in the top of the second inning.

The Big Train extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth, when Santiago scored his second run of the game on an RBI double by David Del Grande (Sacramento State).

After the Cardinals came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, the Big Train regained the lead in the sixth as Tobin scored to make the score 3-2.

The Cardinals rallied again in the eighth inning, scoring two runs to take the 4-3 lead heading into the ninth inning.

Bethesda would answer again in the ninth. After Santiago and Del Grande reached base, Big Train newcomer Kyle Wernicki (Virginia Tech) built on his big game on Friday night by hitting a three-run homer to give the Big Train the 6-4 lead.

However, the lead just wasn't enough. The Cardinals rallied once again in the bottom of the ninth, scoring two runs to tie the game at six and force extra innings.

The Big Train would push across a run in the tenth, but the Cardinals rallied one final time in the tenth, scoring two runs to win the game 8-7.

While the loss is a tough pill to swallow for the Big Train, they still boast a strong 4-2 record in their first six games. The Rockville Express beat the Vienna Riverdogs on Saturday, meaning that the Big Train remain tied with Vienna and Gaithersburg for first place heading into Sunday’s action.

The Big Train will look to stay in first on Sunday night, as they kick off a five-game homestand against the FCA Herndon Braves at Povich Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM, and the gates open at 6:00. It’s Fathers Day and Nationals Night at Povich Field, so come on out for a great night of baseball for dad. Fathers can play catch with their kids in the outfield before the game and the National's Racing Presidents will have a race at Povich Field during the game! Tickets can be purchased here or at the gate!
