The Big Train came into Saturday's game against the FCA Herndon Braves riding a five-game win streak, and had their eyes set on making it six straight. However, the Big Train would have to settle for a 5-1 record on the week, as they lost to the Braves 2-0.
Danny Mooney (Davidson) made the start for the Big Train, and gave up just one run on four hits in his six innings of work, striking out nine batters. While the Big Train could not have asked much more of Mooney, he ultimately took the loss.
On the offensive side of the ball, David Del Grande (Sacramento State) and Ryne Willard (Tallahassee CC) both pieced together two-hit games for the Big Train.
Del Grande's performance brought his batting average up to .438, which is good for third-best in the CRCBL. Josh Spano (High Point) would also contribute to the offense, drawing two walks.
Del Grande and Willard were the only Big Train players to pick up a hit, which was a testament to the quality pitching by the Braves.
Saturday's battle against the Braves marked the Big Train's eighth game in nine days, and the bats were clearly tired. After averaging 10 runs per game in their three prior games, the Big Train will look to avenge Saturday's loss on Sunday as they take on the Braves once again, this time on the road.
The Big Train will then return home on Monday to face the Vienna Riverdogs in a doubleheader. The games are scheduled to begin at 5:00PM and 7:30PM, respectively, and it's Shirley Povich Bobblehead Night! Come out to Povich Field and receive a bobblehead of the stadium's namesake if you're one of the first 500 fans!
