Box Score: W, 21-8
It was an offensive night for the ages last night at Povich Field, as the Big Train defeated the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts 21-8. Though the predicted storms did not occur, the Big Train offense made it rain.
The Big Train scored four runs in the first two innings, but then found themselves trailing for the only time of the night in the third inning as the Thunderbolts scored five runs, taking a 5-4 lead.
However, the offense responded in the bottom of the third, as RBIs by Tucker Tobin (George Mason) and Colin Kish (Florida Southern) would help make it a 7-5 ballgame in favor of the Big Train.
After a quiet fourth inning, the offense blasted back onto the scene in the fifth. After RBI singles from Michael Bass (UNC Wilmington) and Brendan Hendriks (San Francisco), Cole Norton (St. Mary's (CA)) would score on a wild pitch to make the score 10-5. Adam Barry (Cal State Northridge) would then draw a bases-loaded walk to score a run and load the bases for Hunter Renfroe (Mississippi State). Renfroe then took a 1-0 change-up over the wall for a grand slam to extend the lead to 14-5.
The scoring continued in the following inning, as Avondre Bollar (San Diego State) and Norton led off with back-to-back hits. Brennan Middleton (Tulane) and Mike Miedzianowski (High Point) followed that up with RBI doubles to extending the lead into double-digits before Zach Randolph (Mississippi State) tacked on two more runs with a home run to make the score 19-5 headed into the top of the seventh.
The Thunderbolts would score three runs over the next two innings, but it would be far too little and far too late, as two more Big Train runs in the eighth would seal a 21-8 victory.
