We had our chances, but the Bombers prevailed 2-1 over the Big Train on a sunny and very windy Thursday afternoon at Gryphon Field at Montgomery College/Germantown. With their second win in two days over the Big Train, the College Park Bombers moved from last place to second place at the end of the first week of play in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League.
College Park scored all the runs they would need in the third inning. Big Train starting pitcher Robby Smithson (Lipscomb) gave up a bunt single to the game's leadoff batter who was quickly erased while trying to steal second by catcher Steve Fay (Mount St. Mary's). Smithson retired the next six batters in order before giving up a single to Hank Coogan (Richmond) in the bottom of the third. Smithson then threw Jared Williams (Wagner)'s sacrifice bunt into the dirt and down the right field line allowing Coogan to score and Williams to reach third. Nick Jowers (Maryland)'s RBI single scored Williams. Smithson and reliever Chris Eberhart (Florida Atlantic) allowed only three singles the rest of the way.
Seth Overbey (Maryland) allowed only four singles in five innings of work to turn the ball over to the bullpen with a 2-0 lead. Bethesda loaded the bases on relief pitcher Dan Yaniga (Hillsborough) in the top of the seventh as Bryan Thomas (Virginia Tech) reached on an error, Nick Cleckler beat out a bunt, and Fay drew a walk. Thomas scored to make it 2-1 when Yaniga walked Jonnie Knoble (San Francisco). With one out, reliever Ryan Moorer (Maryland) came in to induce a ground out force at home and a strike out. Moorer shut down the Big Train in the final two frames to get a well-earned save.
