Big Train starting pitcher Derek Caldwell (Rider) allowed just one single and no runs in six innings of work to pick up his second victory over the Maryland Redbirds this week. With Sunday night's 2-0 victory before 647 fans at Povich Field, Bethesda holds a two game lead over the Maryland Orioles at the halfway point of the inaugural season of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League.

The Big Train scored in the bottom of the third when with two outs Ken Beamer (Findlay) singled and took second on a wild pitch. Greg Lemon (Salisbury) knocked him in with an RBI single. The second run was a gift. Trey Cuevas (Southern Mississippi) singled and the leftfielder misplayed the ball allowing Cuevas to move to second. With two outs, Jonnie Knoble (San Francisco) hit a towering fly ball that the third baseman dropped. Cuevas, running all the way on what looked like a routine third out, scored.

Robby Smithson (Lipscomb) allowed only one base runner and struck out three of the seven batters he faced in relief in the seventh and eighth innings. Wyatt Stewart (Richmond) gave up a lead-off walk in the ninth but picked up his fifth save by striking out the game's last three batters.
