The rains came to Germantown about 45 minutes too late to save the Big Train from a 4-3 loss to the College Park Bombers at Montgomery College on Thursday afternoon.
The Bombers jumped on top 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a hit-by-pitch, a bunt single and throwing error, and a home run by Benji Marshall (Richmond). The Big Train got one back in the fifth when Andrew Smith (San Francisco)'s infield single plated Nick Cleckler (Jacksonville State). Rhett Teller (St. Leo) walked to lead off the sixth and scored on a home run by Drew Carson (Southern Mississippi) to tie the score at 3. The Bombers loaded the bases in the fifth and sixth innings but did not score. Bethesda relief pitcher Robby Smithson (Lipscomb) walked Dan Parsons (Niagara) to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Parsons moved to second on a sacrifice and third on a ground out. Brandon Fleig (MC/Germantown) drove in the winning run on an opposite field blooper down the leftfield line off reliever Brett Tidball (Maryland).
College Park starter Seth Overbey (Maryland) went 8 innings to get the win and DiCarlo Thompson (Pensacola) retired three straight batters in the ninth for the save. Big Train starter Ron Lowe (St. Leo) gave up 5 hits, three earned runs and 3 walks while striking out 4 in 6 innings of work.
Big Train Notes: The Big Train has now lost 8 games by a total of 13 runs -- one by four runs, two by two runs, and five by one run... Why are the College Park Bombers playing in Germantown? Because the outfield at Shipley Field at the University of Maryland is being renovated... Bethesda is 1-3 on the season against College Park.
