BIG TRAIN OPENS SEASON WITH A 5-3 WIN OVER ORIOLES

Box Score

Two significant thunderstorms threatened to cancel the Big Train's Friday night Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League opener against the AAABA national champion Youse's Maryland Orioles. But the rains stopped and the squeegees did their job. A hardy Povich Field crowd of 529 waited out the storms and a 31 minute delayed start to witness another classic Big Train-Orioles battle. Bethesda struck first scoring three runs in the bottom of the second on a leadoff single by Preston Pehrson (Texas), a walk by Josh Dietz (Bowling Green), a wild pitch, a two RBI single by Bryan Thomas (Virginia Tech), a single by Steve Fay (Mount Saint Mary's), and an RBI single by Cory Lane (UNC-Charlotte). Starting pitcher Keith Moreland (UNC-Charlotte) posted six strong innings giving up just two runs in the top of the fourth while striking out five. Bethesda scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth without benefit of a hit as Dietz walked and scored on a Thomas ground-out and Steven Leach (Jacksonville State) reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Fay. The Orioles put together three hits in a row after two were out in the top of the seventh to pull to within two runs, but reliever Austin Hinkle (Coastal Carolina) staunched the bleeding and Adam Redd (Virginia Tech) closed out the Orioles. Mitch Harris (Navy) took the loss allowing three earned runs in 5 innings while striking out five. Brian Conley (Towson) had three hits for the Orioles.

Big Train Notes: During the opening ceremonies, Homer surprised the crowd by introducing his new born son Bunt (# 1/2) to the Povich faithful. Each family received a schedule magnet courtesy of Hopkins & Porter. It was Baseball is Magic in Bethesda night sponsored by Grossberg Company CPAs. Mascot Mayhem was presented by mascotmarketing.com. The award winning Walter Johnson High School Madrigals sang the National Anthem and serenaded the crowd before the game. Bob Luke, author of DEAN OF UMPIRES: BILL McGOWAN, autographed his book.
