Big Train Can't Come Back From Early Deficit
On a beautiful Monday night at Bachman Field in Anne Arundel County, Youse's Maryland Orioles defeated the Big Train, 5-3.
Offense was limited as both teams combined to have five hits on the evening. Early on, the Orioles were able to capitalize on walks given up by Big Train pitchers to jump out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. But the Orioles defense allowed the Big Train to stay in the game when they committed three errors in the fourth inning to allow Steven Leach (Jacksonville State) and Clay Whittemore (Jacksonville State) to score making it 3-2.
As the game would progress the Orioles would tack on a run in the fifth and the sixth to add insurance. In the fifth Alex Buckoltz (Delaware) laced a one out double down the right field line and later scored while Justin Bour (George Mason) was at the plate. Then in the sixth Wink Nolan (Maryland) drew a walk, stole second base and came home on a double by Nick Natoli (Towson).
By this point, Orioles starting pitcher Scott Swinson (George Washington) was cruising along as he went 7 innings and allowed only one earned run and two hits while striking out 7 to pick up the win.
Big Train 2B and lead off hitter Bert Smith (Jacksonville State) was outstanding getting on base three times as he went 2-3 with a double and a walk. Connor Hoehn (Alabama) also pitched well out of the bullpen going 5 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs on only three hits. Big Train hitters Eli Boike (Michigan State) and Andrew Foster (Bowling Green) each chipped in with an RBI a piece.
W: Swinson (1-0)
L: Frederickson (0-1)
