THROWN AWAY FRIDAY IN GLEN BURNIE, TRAIN LOSES 8-6

The Big Train suffered its third loss in four days Friday despite outhitting Youse's Maryland Orioles 12 to 7 at Bachman Park. Two errant throws led to four unearned runs and allowed the Orioles to win 8-6 and take over first place in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League after the first week of play. The Big Train jumped on top as lead-off batter Cory Lane (UNC-Charlotte) singled, moved to second on a sacrifice, stole third, and scored on a fly to centerfield. Big Train starter Dustin Pease (Mount Saint Mary's) retired the first six Orioles, striking out the 3, 4, 5, and 6 hitters. A throwing error to leadoff the bottom of the third, an RBI double, and a two-out single gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead. The Orioles scored once in the fourth and three times in the fifth. The Orioles took an 8-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two unearned runs without the benefit of a hit as Pease threw a come-backer down the rightfield line. The Big Train mounted a spirited comeback in the final innings, scoring five runs on eight hits but leaving the tying run on base in the ninth. Brian Dozier (Southern Mississippi) led the Big Train hit parade with three hits and three RBIs. Luke Adkins (Southern Mississippi) had two hits and an RBI.
Jon Kibler (Michigan State) got the win for the Orioles, allowing four earned runs in 7+ innings while striking out three. Josh Squatrito (Dundalk CC) got the save, striking out three of the six Big Train batters he faced in the ninth. Seven different Orioles recorded hits.
