Big Train get rolled over by Express
by Bryan Oringher
On a beautiful Sunday night on Father's Day at Shirley Povich Field, the Bethesda Big Train fell to the Rockville Express, 16-3. The loss was the Big Train's first in four games at home on the season, after they won in a huge come-from-behind victory Saturday night, 6-5.
Big Train starter Evan Frederickson (Virginia Tech) struggled with his command for his second consecutive start. After retiring only one batter in his first start, Frederickson retired only two against the Express. He walked 5 and gave up 5 runs on 3 hits.
Right-hander Connor Hoehn (Alabama) didn't fare much better in his 1.2 innings of work, giving up 7 runs, 4 earned. Two Big Train errors didn't help Hoehn's cause either.
Next, manager Sal Colangelo turned to Matt Hiserman (Santa Clara) for his season debut. Against the very potent Express offense, Hiserman was dominant, proving to be the clear bright spot in the blowout loss. Hiserman shut out the Express over 3.2 innings of work, giving up only 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9. Hiserman was able to effectively command his fastball, changeup, and curveball, keeping the Express hitters off-balance.
Still, after giving up 12 runs in the first 3 innings, Hiserman's effort was not nearly enough for the Big Train. RHP Collin Cargill (Southern Mississippi) was also very effective, retiring all 6 batters he faced while striking out 3.
Offensively, the Big Train enjoyed more production from DH Andrew Foster. CF Pat Minogue (Northern Illinois) also had an RBI single, continuing his impressive season at the plate. Andrew Foster (Bowling Green), who doubled in the second inning and scored after hitting a huge 3-run-homer with the Big Train down four runs the night before.
