LANE GETS IT STARTED AGAIN, FUELS BIG TRAIN OFFENSE
Once again, Big Train lead-off hitter Cory Lane (UNC-Charlotte) used his bat and speed to put the Big Train on the scoreboard in the first inning. Saturday night at Povich Field before a crowd of 617, Lane led off the bottom of the first with a single, raced to third on a single by Nick Cleckler (Jacksonville State), and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Luke Adkins (Southern Mississippi). The T'Bolts drew even at 1 in the top of the third as Joe Maca (Catholic) doubled and scored on an RBI single by Justin Handler (LaSalle). The Bolts had the bases loaded with just one out, but Big Train starter Jimmy Saris (Georgetown) limited the damage to just the one run. In the bottom of the fifth, Lane, Cleckler, and Adkins had back-to-back-to-back singles to give Bethesda a 2-1 lead. Saris turned the ball over to Chris Cullen (Michigan State) after five innings. Cullen worked three scoreless innings. Brian Dozier (Southern Mississippi) led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double and scored an insurance run on an RBI sacrifice fly by Brian Thomas (Virginia Tech). Closer Adam Redd (Virginia Tech) made it a little bit interesting in the top of the ninth before recording his second save of the season. After two flyouts, Redd allowed a single and hit a batter before a great pickup by the shortstop Dozier ended the game. Saris got his second win of the season, allowing just one run in five innings while striking out five. The Big Train pitchers benefitted from some stellar defense behind them. Jared Yecker (St. John's) took the loss, allowing two earned runs in five innings while striking out three. Handler reached base in four of five at-bats including singles in his first three at-bats and getting hit by the pitch in the ninth.

Big Train Notes: Big Train players Alex Massari (San Francisco) and Wyatt Stewart (Richmond) joined Homer on Saturday at the Potomac Library to wrap-up our Big Train Slide Into a Good Book Program sponsored by Sandy Spring Builders. The Big Train organized a seminar on summer college baseball for the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) Saturday afternoon. Author Paul Dickson spoke to the SABR group and then signed copies of his Hidden Language of Baseball -- everything you ever wanted to know about what that third base coach is really doing when he isn't just scratching. It was Hungry for Music Night at Povich Field. Jeff Cambell's wonderful organization has put together an amazing collection of baseball CDs that were on sale at Povich. Stay tuned for Volume 9 coming out in August. Also, the group collects musical instruments for children in need and school programs. The American Diabetes Association was the night's featured non-profit organization. And Big Train Raffle Maestro Brian Haven celebrated his graduation from high school with his friends.
