Good Pitching Not Enough as Train Lose in 11

By David Ireland
In a hard faught battle on Monday night at Herndon HS the Big Train fell to the Herndon Braves, 3-2 in eleven innings. When all was said and done the game had ended on an interference call when in the bottom of the eleventh Joe Palumbo (Maryland) scored the game winner for the Braves.

Both sides pitched very well with Mitch Herold (Central Florida) leading the way for the Big Train. He ended his night with a no decision pitching 6 2/3 innings and allowing only four hits and one earned run while striking out six.

Equally, for the Braves, Paul Rodriguez (Coastal Carolina) pitched well, going 5 innings and allowed only three hits, no earned runs while striking out four.

The Braves scored first on an RBI single by Val Arduini (Binghamton) in the third inning. But the Big Train answered back with their only two runs of the ballgame in the top of the fourth.

Scoring was scarce from there on out as both teams put the clamps down. But Herndon did manage to get even in the bottom of the seventh when Herold got into some trouble after walking the bases loaded. As he exited the game Collin Cargill (Southern Mississippi) entered and gave up a base hit to Dane Grandizio to score Dan Palumbo (George Mason). Cargill was able to get out of the inning and hold the score tied and continued to pitch well in relief.

In the bottom of the eleventh Joe Palumbo led off with a double. He was then moved to third on sacrifice bunt by Kyle Armeny (Pennsylvania). With one out, Jarrett Parker (Virginia) was intentionally walked to set up a doubleplay and up came Matthew Kulbacki (Kutztown). Kulbacki grounded over towards third base but the fielder got in the way of Palumbo as he was trying to field the ball and the umpire called intereference on the fielder and gave Palumbo the winning run.

Braves relief pitcher, Jason Kuhn (James Madison) got the win pitching 4 innings and allowing no runs with five strikeouts.

Big Train 2 6 4
Braves 3 6 3
