PEASE + SMITHSON + PEHRSON'S BAT = 3-2 VICTORY
Box Score
Despite stranding 14 base runners, the Big Train won a gritty 3-2 victory Wednesday over the AAABA National Champion Youse's Orioles on a gorgeous night for baseball at Bachman Park. Corey Lane (UNC-Charlotte) led off the third inning with a single and scored on a two out double to rightfield by designated hitter Preston Pehrson off his Texas teammate Hunter Harris. Awesome defensive plays by shortstop Brian Dozier (Southern Mississippi) denied the Orioles' efforts to respond in the bottom of the third. Big Train starter Dustin Pease (Mount Saint Mary's) got himself out of a jam in the fourth. The leadoff hitter singled, and the next batter slashed a bouncer off Pease's pitching arm. The sidearmer then induced a comebacker and turned a 1-6-3 double play. Bethesda took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Orioles reliever Eddie Bach (UMBC) walked Steve Fay (Mount Saint Mary's) who advanced on a single by Lane and scored on a throwing error. The Orioles responded with a run in the bottom of the frame as Brian Conley (Towson) doubled and scored on an RBI groundout by Ryan Rhoden (Alabama). With two outs in the top of the eighth, the Big Train picked up a needed insurance run as Matt Long (Santa Clara) doubled, Luke Adkins (Southern Mississippi) singled, and Pehrson shot a single through the right side of the infield for his second RBI of the night and a 3-1 Big Train advantage. Conley walked to lead-off the bottom of the eighth. After Big Train reliever Robby Smithson (Lipscomb) struck out the next two batters, Rhoden tripled down the rightfield line to score Conley. In the bottom of the ninth, Smithson allowed a walk and a single to put the tying run in scoring position before inducing a popup to preserve the victory.
