REDD BACK IN STARTER ROLE PICKS UP FIRST VICTORY

Last summer, Adam Redd (Virginia Tech) was manager Sal Colangelo's most reliable starter. This summer, Redd has been the team's closer. Thursday night at Povich Field, Redd started the game against the Rockville Express and picked up a W, allowing one unearned run and four hits over six innings. Preston Pehrson (Texas) got the Big Train on the board leading off the bottom of the second with a home run high into the trees beyond rightfield. Two outs later, the boys from Jacksonville State combined to give Bethesda a 2-0 lead as Steven Leach doubled and Nick Cleckler singled him home. Rockville got one back in the top of the fifth with back-to-back hits by Phil Boscarino (UC-Riverside) and Eric Morrison (Duquesne) and a Big Train throwing error.In the seventh, the Big Train picked up an insurance run on a double by Bryan Thomas (Virginia Tech) and an RBI single by Cleckler. The Express threatened in the eighth inning as the Big Train reliever walked the first three batters but catcher Pehrson caught two of them attempting to steal and second baseman Cory Lane (UNC-Charlotte) snared a line drive. Wyatt Stewart (Richmond) struck out two in the ninth and got the save as the Big Train stretched its league lead over the second place Express to two games.

Big Train Notes: It was Manager Sal Colangelo's 34th birthday Wednesday and Rockville Express President John Pflieger presented Sal with 34 cupcakes before the game. Keyote of the Frederick Keys came back to Povich Field on Thursday night for the eighth straight year. Ron Weber, the longtime voice of the Washington Capitals, graced the Big Train announcing mike. The game was webcast and an archived recording is available. The game was sponsored by Richard Leggin Architects. Dick Leggin has taken the lead in designing a new brick garden for the entrance to Povich Field. Bricks are on sale for $250 and $500 at Povich Field through August 1.
