The game was lost in the top of the ninth with the score tied at two when Randy Boyle (UMBC), attempting to sacrifice bunt, reached base on a throwing error and later raced home on a wild pitch. The Big Train took the lead in the first when Matt Long (Santa Clara) singled with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a dropped fly ball. The Big Train extended its lead to two in the fourth inning when Luke Adkins (Southern Mississippi) walked and scored on a single by Brian Dozier (Southern Mississippi). The Redbirds tied the score with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings that resulted from a hit batsman and a throwing error.
