JUST A BRIEF MID-SEASON SLUMP? Box Score

Even good teams suffer mid-season slumps. Let's hope ours is brief. For the second night in a row the Big Train lost to the last place Maryland Redbirds, extending our scoring drought to 14 innings. The Redbirds won 2-0 Monday night at Bachman Park, scoring both runs in the third inning. After retiring the first seven batters in order, Big Train starting pitcher Jimmy Saris (Georgetown) walked Nachion Moore (Radford) and gave up a single to Randy Boyle (Salisbury). Moore advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. After another out and another walk, Jimmy Dishmey-Perez (Morris CC) singled home Boyle. Saris pitched through the sixth striking out six and holding the score at 2-0. Robby Smithson (Lipscomb) struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief, but the Big Train offense couldn't deliver the needed runs. Redbird starter Mike Schurz (Radford) scattered six hits over eight innings while striking out four to pick up the win. Reliever Dan Oleynik (Salisbury) got two out in the top of the ninth but then gave up back-to-back pinch hit singles to Alex Massari (San Francisco) and Josh Dietz (Bowling Green) before giving way to Mark Beppler (Radford) who got the last out on a pop-up. Steven Leach (Jacksonville State) had two singles and a triple for Bethesda.

Big Train Notes: With many families still in town for Big Train Parents Weekend, there were more fans rooting for Bethesda in Glen Burnie Monday night than for the home team Redbirds... The Big Train players have Tuesday off and many will attend the Nationals-Marlins game at RFK Stadium with their families. If you will be at the game, come to section 510 and say hello.
