BIG TRAIN SPLITS SUNDAY DH WITH REDBIRDS Box Scores

Youse's Orioles split a doubleheader with the College Park Bombers on Sunday afternoon, but the Big Train failed to take advantage as a last inning rally fell just short Sunday night at Povich Field. The Big Train jumped on Redbirds' starting pitcher for three runs in the first game of a doubleheader and hung on for a 3-1 win. In the second game, Bethesda got on top again in the first, this time 2-0, but the Redbirds took control in the late innings and held on for a 5-4 win.

Cory Lane (UNC-Charlotte) singled to start the first game. Nick Cleckler (Jacksonville State) was hit by a pitch, and Matt Long (Santa Clara) singled to load the bases. Preston Pehrson (Texas) got Lane home on a sacrifice fly, and Luke Adkins (Southerm Mississippi) singled home Cleckler and Long. Bethesda starting pitcher Adam Redd (Virginia Tech) held the Redbirds scoreless through four innings and struck out the first two batters in the fifth before giving up a run on a walk, stolen base, and single. Chris Cullen (Michigan State) took over from Redd and pitched two scoreless innings. Cullen was assisted by back-to-back web gems in the sixth as Brian Dozier (Southern Mississippi) made a running over-the-shoulder catch and Steven Leach (Jacksonville State) made a leaping catch of a line drive.

Deja vu: Cory Lane (UNC-Charlotte) opened the second game with a single. He stole second, moved to third on a ground-out, and was awarded home on a balk by the pitcher. Matt Long (Santa Clara) doubled and scored on a single by Luke Adkins (Southern Mississippi). In the fourth, Dustin Douglas (Frostberg) singled two Redbirds home to knot the score at two. In the fifth, a single, a sacrifice, an error, a walk, and a sacrifice fly put the Redbirds in the lead 3-2. Austin Hinkle (Coastal Carolina) replaced Big Train starter Dustin Pease (Mount St. Mary's) in the fifth and gave up two runs in the sixth on a double by Riley Gorman (Mary Washington) and singles by Randy Boyle (Salisbury) and Jace McManis (Dartmouth). Gorman was three-for-three in the nightcap. In the bottom of the seventh a Big Train rally fell just short. Josh Dietz (Bowling Green) led off with a carbon copy of his Saturday night home run over the right field fence. Reliever Tommy Howell (Salisbury) struck out the next two Big Train hitters. He walked Brian Dozier (Southern Mississippi) and Long. Pinch-hitter Adam Redd (Virginia Tech) dumped a single into right field to score Dozier and put the tying run on third base, but Howell got the third out on a popup to gain a Sunday split decision for the Redbirds.
