On a scorching hot night at Bachman Park in Anne Arundel County Monday, three Big Train pitchers combined to shutout the Maryland Redbirds, 6-0.
Brandon McClurg (Lipscomb) started the game for Bethesda and pitched efficiently over the first 6 innings. Then Hugh Adams (Florida Atlantic) pitched two and Chase Tigert (San Francisco) closed out the game in relief.
Offensively, the Big Train only needed two scoring efforts in the third and fifth innings to put the game away. In their four-run third inning Michael Cipolla (St. Mary's CA) had the big hit with a double that plated both Drew Lee (Morehead State) and Zach Kim (San Francisco), who had both reached on singles. That was enough damage to chase Redbirds starting pitcher Eric Jarrett (Bucknell) from the game.
Bethesda's fifth and sixth runs, more than enough needed to put the game out of reach, came in the top of the fifth when Luke Adkins (Mississippi State) laced a double down the right field line to score Danny Stienstra (San Jose State) and Cipolla to cap the scoring for the night.
The Redbirds lone offensive bright spot came from Nick Wojnowski (Rider), who had a double, single, and a walk.
