Big Train Split Double-Header

Friday, July 3, 2009
Game 1
Box Score
by Zach Stone

In the first game of a double-header against the second-place Youse's Orioles, the Bethesda Big Train came up just short, falling 3-2.

The Big Train started off strong, as Connor Bernatz (San Francisco) and Eli Boike (Michigan State) both scored in the top of the first inning. That was all the offense the Big Train could muster against Orioles starter Andrew Permison (Towson) who tossed a complete game. Permison did not allow a hit after a Michael Bottoms (Morehead State) single in the second inning, and did not allow a base-runner after a Boike walk in the third.

The Orioles also scored all of their runs in one inning, but they had three runners cross the plate in the third inning against Big Train starter Jordan Beistline (Jacksonville State). The Orioles did not record a hit in the inning, but took advantage of three walks and a hit-by-pitch.

Nolan Rudman (Ventura) pitched two perfect innings to keep the Big Train close.

Dominant pitching defined the day, as locals Hugh Adams (Florida Atlantic, St. John's College High School) of the Big Train and Kevin Brady (Clemson, Gaithersburg High School) of the Orioles squared off in the second game of the doubleheader. Both pitchers threw complete games, and Adams came out on top as the Big Train edged Youse's Orioles 2-0.

Batters on both teams had a difficult time at the plate early on in the game, and Brady was perfect through three innings. The Big Train broke through in the bottom of the fourth when center fielder Connor Bernatz walked and right fielder Eli Boike was hit by a pitch after he pulled back a bunt attempt. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, new cleanup hitter Cody Freeman (Mississippi State) stepped to the plate and laced a single to left, scoring Bernatz from second.

The team added to its lead in the sixth inning through production from the heart of the order. Boike reached base on an error by the Orioles' shortstop to begin the inning, and was moved to third on a hard single up the middle by third baseman Danny Stienstra (San Jose State). Freeman again delivered for the Big Train, connecting on a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Boike home. Prior to the game, Brady had only allowed one earned run in 16.2 innings pitched.

Adams was nearly flawless in his seven innings, allowing only four baserunners and striking out five batters. Adams is now 4-0 on the season.

ACC Freshman of the Year Danny Hultzen (University of Virginia) throws out a first pitch at the Big Train game.
