Big Train take down Express

Zach Stone

On Sunday night, the Bethesda Big Train notched win #19 on the season with a 5-1 defeat of the Rockville Express. The victory clinched the Montgomery Cup for the Big Train, as it moved them to 8-0 against Montgomery County competition this season.

The offense started slow, as the Big Train was held scoreless the first half of the game. In the fifth inning, Mike Celenza (Salisbury) and Jack Mosbacher (Stanford) each singled and scored thanks to RBI singles by Ryan Mulligan (St. Mary's CA) and Danny Stienstra (San Jose State).

The Big Train tacked on an insurance run in the next inning to make the score 3-1 thanks to a leadoff double by Luke Adkins (Mississippi State).

The Big Train added two more runs in the seventh inning. After a Mosbacher single, Connor Bernatz (San Francisco) doubled to set the stage for Stienstra to put the game away. His single plated both runners, and made the score 5-1.

Local product Gabe Feldman (Wake Forest, Walt Whitman High School) allowed one unearned run in two innings.  Michael Bottoms (Morehead State) came on in relief to earn the win. Bottoms allowed only two base-runners in five scoreless innings.

Ryan Vander Tuig (San Jose State) and Mike Matta (Mount St. Mary's) each pitched a scoreless inning to close the game.
