BIG TRAIN BASE BALL & AUCTION NETS $50,000+
TO IMPROVE FIELDS FOR KIDS!
Thanks to all the sponsors, bidders, donors of auction items, and volunteers who made it possible for the Bethesda Community Base Ball Club to raise more than $50,000 to improve youth baseball and softball fields. The December 7, 2003 Base Ball & Auction was another great success, pushing the total amount we have been able to spend to improve youth fields to more than $200,000 over the last four years. Most recently, we spent $10,000 to regrade and resod the infield at Walter Johnson High School for the upcoming 2004 season. We think our namesake, the Big Train himself, would be proud of what we have been able to accomplish. In addition, we were able to initiate the John Ourisman Big Train Volunteer Honor Roll recognizing 29 volunteers who have each given five years of service to the Big Train. Brian Haven, Bill Hickman, and Keyote received Outstanding Service Awards. Bob Hatzes, Kelton Jacobson, Barbara Siegel, Beth Haven, and Jeff Haven received Special Recognition Awards. Derek Hacopian named Mike Costanzo of Coastal Carolina University our 2003 Most Valuable Player and Shay Horseman of Middle Tennessee State University our Most Outstanding Pitcher. Phil Leibovitz of Sandy Spring Builders won this year's Home Run Derby. Thanks to Tim Kurkjian of ESPN's Baseball Tonight for an excellent talk about one of the greatest post-seasons of all-time and baseball's amazing December.
