Keith Moreland Named Griff League Player of the Week
Keith Moreland of the Bethesda Big Train has been selected as the 2004 Clark C. Griffith Collegiate Baseball League Player of the Week for July 9-16. Moreland, a right-handed pitcher, pitched the first no-hitter in the CGCBL this season and the fourth in the six-year history of the Big Train in an 8-0 victory over the Baltimore Pride in the second game of a doubleheader on July 14. It was the first no-hitter in the league since Bethesda’s Mark Galvin pitched a seven-inning no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts on July 27, 2001. Moreland walked the first batter he faced, then got a double-play grounder and proceeded to retire the next 22 Pride batters in a row. He walked another batter in the ninth inning and finished the game with two walks and seven strikeouts. Moreland made his first two starts of the season last week, adding a 12-1 victory over the Reston Hawks on July 9 as he allowed six hits, one earned run, walked none and struck out five in seven innings. For the season, he is 5-0 with a 0.83 earned run average in eight appearances (two starts), allowing 17 hits in 32.2 innings with 8 walks and 30 strikeouts. He leads the CGCBL in wins and ERA, and opponents are batting just .156 against him.
