Pease and Knoble Sweep Player of the Week Awards
Dustin Pease (Mount St. Mary's) and Jonnie Knoble (San Francisco) became the first Cal Ripken, Sr. League teammates to sweep the weekly Player of the Week competition when the two were named the league's Pitcher and Hitter of the Week, respectively, for the week of July 19 - July 24.
Trailing the league-leading Maryland Orioles by a half-game in the league standings entering a Friday doubleheader in Bethesda, the Big Train dropped the seven-inning front-end to fall to a game and a half behind the Orioles. A Maryland sweep would have left Bethesda with a two and half game deficit in the league standings with just over a week to go in the regular season. Pease took the hill for the Big Train in the night-cap and responded to the pressure, tossing a complete-game shutout against the top hitting team in the league. Pease scattered six hits and two walks while striking out five to win his fourth game of the season and bring Bethesda back to within a half-game of first place. Though Bethesda won their final two games of the week, the Orioles won three of four over the weekend to increase their games lead to one in the league standings. Pease pitched in relief for the Montgomery All-Stars at the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game on July 18 at Ripken Stadium.
Knoble hit .476 (10-for-21) with a double, triple and four RBI this week. He also stole two bases and scored five runs for the Big Train. Knoble hit in his first four games this week, with multi-hit games coming in his first three. He had nine hits in his first thirteen at bats, including a four-hit game against the College Park Bombers on July 20. Knoble had a triple, two RBI, and three runs scored in that game. Knoble started in centerfield for the Montgomery All-Stars in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game on July 18 at Ripken Stadium.
