Derek Caldwell, a left-handed pitcher from Rider University, was slated to return to pitch for the Big Train this season before being sidelined by Tommy John surgery this spring. Last season, Derek helped lead the Big Train to the Inaugural Season Championship of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate League by going 4-1 with a 1.48 ERA. Derek defeated Silver Spring-Takoma 3-0 in the final game of the League Championship Series. He helped lead Salisbury HS to a District Championship with a 2.32 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 60 innings. Derek is a Communications major at Rider. He lists the Atlanta Braves as his favorite team. Derek enjoys golf, basketball, ping pong, and chess.
