Join the Big Train Volunteer Team!

We want you to be part of our Youth Volunteer Team! Volunteering with Big Train is a great way to give back to the community while being an integral part of a winning organization! Additionally, these roles give volunteers a chance to learn and practice valuable workplace skills such as customer service, timeliness and leadership.

Big Train offers several different game day youth volunteer opportunities:

  • The Foul Ball Patrol is responsible for retrieving foul balls from beyond the stadium fence and returning them to staff members, as well as keeping younger children from running outside the stadium and into the street chasing baseballs. Members of this group will be stationed both inside and outside the stadium.
  • Concessions Staff work in the kitchen during each game. They wrap and organize hot food as it comes off the grill and pass food to the interns working the concessions windows. This can be a fast-paced, high-energy job on many nights, and is reserved for older volunteers who have prior experience working with Big Train.
  • Event Assistants aid with the general stadium operation. On any given night, they may be asked to pass out promotional materials at the front gate, help with special events in the stadium, keep kids safe throughout the facility, or fill in as ushers or foul ball retrievers if needed.
  • Mascot assignment will be of limited hours during game days. On game days, you will be bring energy, excitement, and customer service to our fans at Shirley Povich. You will walk through the stadium, on the field, take pictures, and more!

Each game day role runs from 5:00-10:00 p.m., unless otherwise specified. Volunteers can pick which dates they would like to work ahead of time, and will attend a training session before the season begins. These positions qualify for Student Service Learning hours. Volunteers must keep track of their own hours, and can submit them at the end of the summer to receive a signed SSL sheet.

Randy Schools Service Awards

Big Train baseball at Shirley Povich Field doesn't just happen. Bethesda Community Base Ball Club Founders John Ourisman and Bruce Adams envisioned a community-based organization staffed largely by volunteers. Because so many community residents have stepped up to help out as volunteers, Big Train has contributed more than $600,000 over the years to improve baseball and softball fields for kids. Since our inaugural season in 1999, under the leadership of our original volunteer coordinator Bill Hickman, more than 1,000 volunteers have helped to make Big Train baseball a special experience for local baseball fans. We recognize our most outstanding volunteers and supporters in two ways. Since 2002, 92 community heroes have received the Randy Schools Outstanding Service Awards. Since 2003, 94 volunteers have been included on the John Ourisman Big Train Volunteer Honor Roll in recognition of five years of volunteer service to Big Train baseball.

John Ourisman Volunteer Honor Roll

Since 2004 the Big Train have recognized those who have dedicated their summers to helping us create welcoming, friendly, and fan-focused entertainment. The Big Train volunteers have been listed on the John Ourisman Big Train Volunteer Honor Roll in appreciation for five years of volunteer service to Big Train baseball and its fans. The award is named in honor of John Ourisman in appreciation for his leadership in establishing the Bethesda Community Base Ball Club and building Shirley Povich Field.

In 2023 we add two members to the Honor Roll

  • Aaron Simon (Veeck Fellow)
  • Jack Stashower (DiMisa Fellow)
