Battle of the Best: Giants vs Big Train Preview

by Staff

The Big Train have been rolling as of late, bouncing back from their slow start that saw Bethesda drop a couple consecutive early games. Now, the Big Train are atop the standings once again, as they've improved to 5-2.

The team close on their heels? The Gaithersburg Giants (5-3). In this game, the #1 and #2 teams so far will match up with the winner advancing to the front of the pack, at least momentarily. Bethesda and Gaithersburg have already faced off once this season, June 12, a game which the Big Train won in Gaithersburg, 8-2.

In that contest, Matt Thomas (William & Mary) clocked in a couple hits and a couple RBIs, which makes him a name to watch in the rematch as well. Gio Diaz (St. Mary's CA) showed excellent discipline at the plate, drawing four walks. It will be interesting to see if either of those players can build off of their earlier performances.

Another key for the Big Train will undoubtedly be pitching. Thus far, there's been a sizable difference in the pitching during wins and losses. Not counting Friday's 13-12 slugfest, they're allowing an average of 0.75 runs per game in their first four victories. During their losses, however, they're allowing an average of 8.5 runs per game. If the Big Train want to hold onto first place, the pitchers will need to be locked in.

The game will get underway at Shirley Povich Field at 7 p.m. on Saturday night. Come to the field to cheer on your hometown Bethesda Big Train against a formidable foe.
