Big Train look to set record-breaking start in double-header

by Staff

After having tied their own record for the longest win streak to start the season (eighth games, set in 2000 and 2011), the Bethesda Big Train (8-0) have the chance to break the record today, taking on the Silver Spring-Takoma Park T-Bolts (3-4) in a doubleheader.

Offensively, the Big Train have been dominant, with four players— Alec Burleson (East Carolina), Justin Wylie (Arizona), Carson Taylor (Virginia Tech) and Jacob Westerman—all batting above .350. Including the four, eight players in total are batting above .300 so far.

For the Thunderbolts, only two players are batting above .350, Zach Buck and Max Dineen. Including Buck and Dineen six players are batting above .300. The team is also reaching base approximately ten percent less than the Big Train, with Silver Spring-Takoma Park holding a .346 on-base percentage, and Bethesda having a .446 on-base percentage.

For the first game of the doubleheader it will be right-hander Carlos Lomeli (St. Mary’s CA) on the mound for the Big Train. The sophomore already has one win under his belt this summer, pitching five scoreless innings against the River Dogs on June 7. Lomeli will battle fellow righty Cheng-You Chen, who enters with a 6.75 ERA in four innings pitched, with no outing lasting longer than two innings in his three appearances this summer.

For game two, left-hander Brock Guffey (Alabama) will pitch for Bethesda. The sophomore also has one win and a 0.00 ERA entering the game. Silver Spring-Takoma Park has not announced a pitcher for game two.

In order for the Big Train to continue at the pace they’re going, the team needs to continue its dominance at the plate, taking the early lead, and continue keeping runs off the scoreboard.

Both games will be played at Blair Stadium. First pitch for game one is set for 4 p.m., and game two is set for 7 p.m.
