Big Train takes on Giants in home opener
After starting the season with an 11-2 victory in D.C. against the Grays, the Bethesda Big Train will look to continue its success in its home opener today against the Gaithersburg Giants.
Left-hander Tuck Tucker (Maryland) will start on the mound for the Big Train. Tucker ended the spring season for New Mexico Junior College with a 4.58 ERA in 39.1 innings pitched.
Against the Grays on Tuesday, Big Train head coach Sal Colangelo was impressed with his pitchers’ abilities to work ahead in the count, noting that the run support (six runs in the first two innings) helped the pitching staff maintain control on the mound.
Because of the offensive prowess of Tuesday’s lineup, the starting lineup today will stay largely the same, according to Colangelo.
Of Tuesday’s lineup, four players recorded two RBIs. This includes Fox Semones (James Madison), as well as Tyler Villaroman (San Francisco), John Glenn (California Baptist) and Justin Wylie (Arizona). Glenn also had three hits, while Semones and Wylie had two, including a solo home run from Wylie that started the scoring.
Left-hander Jaret Bennett (Charleston Southern) will start on the mound for the Giants. In their first game, three players had more than one hit: Adam Spurlin (Elon), Joey Goodwin (UMBC) and Andres Machado (UMBC).
First pitch is set for 7 p.m. for the Big Train’s season home opener at Shirley Povich Field.
