Big Train To Host Gaithersburg In First Exhibition

by Staff

Saturday evening, the three-time defending Cal Ripken League champion Bethesda Big Train will be back in action. The Big Train will play host to the Gaithersburg Giants in their first of two exhibition games prior to the start of the regular season in Silver Spring on June 5th.

Gaithersburg is coming off a 2018 season that saw them post a 20-20 regular season record, good for second in the Cal Ripken Collegiate North Division. The Giants will have a different look this season as they return just two players from their 2018 roster in outfielder Ryan Brown (UMBC) and pitcher Kiernan Higgins (Coastal Carolina).

As for Bethesda, they return five players from their 2018 championship roster. The list of returners include: catcher Jacob Southern (Jacksonville), outfielder Tyler Villaroman (San Francisco) and a trio of pitchers in Jacob McCarvel (Cal Baptist), Anthony Piccolino (James Madison) and Elliot Zoellner (Maryland).

In four meetings with the Giants in 2018, the Big Train went a perfect 4-0 outscoring, Gaithersburg 38-8.

First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field with Gates set to open at 5:30 p.m. For both Saturday's exhibition with Gaithersburg and Sunday’s with the Little Big Train admission will be free for all fans.
