The Bethesda Big Train has been battling all season long to take home yet another regular season championship. Throughout this season, the Gaithersburg Giants have stayed at the top of the North division.

The two teams have met five times in 2024, with Gaithersburg holding a slight series edge, 3-2, with many back and forth affairs coming down to the wire. The two teams meet again on Saturday, July 13 at Shirley Povich Field.

Manager Sal Colangelo is preparing his team for yet another playoff appearance.

“We will take it one game at a time. One game on the 20th if we don’t win the regular season, we’ll throw our best and win that game, and get ready for two out of three,” said Colangelo.

The aforementioned game on July 20 would be the opening round of the playoffs, where the three seed plays the six seed and the four seed plays the five seed. This seeding is based on overall record, not division. The two division winners are given the one and two seed.

As it stands now, the Big Train currently holds third place, setting itself up for a home playoff game on July 20 against the six seed. At 17-14, Bethesda currently holds a two and a half game lead over the fourth place Cropdusters.

Colangelo is not worried about where his team ends up in the seeding, and knows it has the tools to take down any team in the league.

“There’s no big difference being at home. Baseball is baseball, we have to hit it with a wood bat, and throw it over the plate,” said Colangelo.

The Big Train will look to inch closer to the Giants on Saturday July 13 at home. Get tickets or watch the broadcast below!

The race for the Montgomery Cup sponsored by Montgomery Community Media (MCM) is even tighter. With just three games left, any one of three teams could emerge with the title in the annual competition between the four Ripken League teams based in Montgomery County. Big Train (8-7) and Cropdusters (8-7) each trail the Gaithersburg Giants (9-6) by one game. The Big Train travels to Olney to face the Cropdusters on Friday July 12. Join us at Povich Field Saturday night July 13 for our final showdown with the Giants. On Sunday July 14, the Big Train plays the Thunderbolts (5-10) in Silver Spring in the final Montgomery Cup game of the season.
